Survey Name: Texas Lawyer Lateral Hiring Report

Lateral hiring in the Texas offices of 19 of the 25 largest firms in Texas increased by 6 percent in 2014 compared to the number of the lateral hires made by the same firms in 2013, according to data collected in Texas Lawyer’s annual Lateral Moves Survey.

Texas Lawyer invited the state’s 25 largest firms to participate in the online survey between Jan. 13 and Feb. 5, 2015. The 25 firms include Texas-based firms and out-of-state firms with large Texas operations, ranked according to Texas attorney counts on Texas Lawyer’s “The Texas 100” list published April 28, 2014.

In 2014, the 19 reporting firms hired a total of 269 lateral attorneys in their Texas offices; in 2013 the same firms hired 254 laterals in Texas. As of Jan. 1, 2015, the 19 firms had 4,056 attorneys in their Texas offices.

Five of the 25 firms declined to participate in the survey: Andrews Kurth; Jackson Walker; Jones Day; Norton Rose Fulbright; and Thompson, Coe, Cousins & Irons. McKool Smith did not make any lateral hires in its Texas offices during 2014.
